WHEN CHOOSING YOUR NEXT EMPLOYER.

10 Questions to Ask

Whether you’re a seasoned RN looking for a new challenge or a high school graduate seeking an entry-level health care position, finding a great job goes beyond the job description and the hourly rate or annual salary you’ll be receiving. From a company’s values to job flexibility to growth opportunities, there are several things you should keep in mind when deciding between potential employers.

Here are the 10 we think are most important (click on the toggle buttons to see our answers to these questions).

As important as this is, many people never even know or understand the values of the company they are going to work for. Yet, finding happiness and satisfaction in any job comes from an alignment of your values and your employer’s values. That’s because working for a company is a lot more than just the paycheck you take home or the hours that you work. It’s about knowing that the company values – and stands up for – the same things you do. At CoxHealth at Home, our values are compassion, integrity, excellence, communication, and team work, and we look for these same values in every person we hire. Why? Because when our employees value the same things we do, it is much easier to create a sense of belonging and build a lasting relationship. If you share our values and want to be a part of an organization with foundational principles that not only are respected, but also believed in, then CoxHealth at Home might be a great fit for you.
Even if your position requires you to spend most days in the field, you will still be working with a team back at the office. Whether face to face or virtually, you’re going to be spending a lot of time with your new co-workers, so it’s important to make sure that they’re people you’d like to work with. A key to being happy in your job is having co-workers you get along with, especially if the company is built on a team philosophy – which CoxHealth at Home is. Whether you’re a member of a care team or a back-office support team, how well your team works together is often a product of how the team likes each other. For this reason, we spend a lot of time ensuring positive team dynamics, because high-performing teams often translate to high-performing health care.
Having the chance to learn new things is important in any position, but it’s especially important in healthcare, because best practices, technologies, therapies, and standards of care are constantly evolving. To that end, it is important that your employer is willing to invest as much in you as they are in that new software application you’ll be required to learn. At CoxHealth at Homee, we offer ongoing training and continuing education to ensure our staff is always at the top of their game.
In addition to offering you opportunities to learn, a great company should also offer you opportunities for advancement, if, of course, advancement is important to you. We know through experience that not everyone wants to move into a management position, and we respect the home care nurse who wants only to be a bedside nurse as much as we admire the in-home aide who has no desire to do anything other than to be an outstanding in-home aide. However, for those who are driven to advance, the opportunities need to be real. At CoxHealth at Home, when a position becomes available, we always look inward first, asking ourselves, “Who do we already have within the organization who could excel in this role?” By seeking internal candidates, we ensure we maximize advancement opportunities whenever possible.
We aren’t shy in telling people that the work we do is hard and not everyone is cut out to be part of our home care or hospice team. While feeling appreciated is an important part of any life experience, when the work is difficult, feeling appreciated becomes especially important. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that a company should provide excessive perks or benefits, it does mean that your employer should make you feel valued by offering thanks when going above and beyond, positive feedback for the work that you do, and supporting your efforts to learn and improve. At CoxHealth at Home, our leadership team truly loves our staff, and our managers feel that their most important job is to make every employee feel appreciated in theirs.
One of the most important things a company can offer its employees is a secure and stable work environment. This means that the company has a proven history of success and a track record of being a strong employer. CoxHealth at Home’s roots go back to 1974, making us the oldest and most-experienced home care agency in the region. Our 40 years of experience sets us apart from all the others in southwestern Missouri. What’s more, working at CoxHealth at Home means you are working with the home care and hospice provider trusted by more physicians, families, and patients to provide compassionate care, innovative services, and cutting-edge technology.
While most of your success depends on you, there are several things an employer can do to help you achieve your professional goals, including providing frequent, positive feedback, as well as training and continuing education. At CoxHealth at Home, we provide regular in-services to help employees develop new skills. We also encourage employees to further their education by providing tuition reimbursement, which provides many of our employees the opportunity to earn their first college degree or extend their current degree even further.
Great companies make sure that employees are involved in creating, well, a great company. This means involving employees in creating a company culture, allowing employees to offer suggestions for improvement that are taken seriously and acted upon, and asking employees for input on the future direction of the company. When employees are included in decisions that impact the company, they then feel valued and part of something bigger than themselves. We take pride in including our employees in important company decisions and seeking feedback whenever possible.
Today, people are busier than ever and are juggling multiple responsibilities. They are not only employees, but also mothers and fathers, wives and husbands, soccer coaches, PTA presidents, Sunday school teachers, and more. As such, employees want to know that there is job flexibility that allows them to schedule a personal appointment when needed or attend their child’s track meet – without a bunch of red tape. At CoxHealth at Home, we recognize that our employees have other significant responsibilities, relationships, and roles outside of the workplace. After all, if we provide room for success inside of CoxHealth at Home, then we must provide room for success outside of CoxHealth at Home, too, which is why we have been offering flexible scheduling long before it become popular to do so.
While we saved this for last, it is the most important item on our list. Integrity is one of those things that is hard to define – as the word itself can have a very general meaning – but most people know integrity when they see it. To us, integrity is about knowing what you stand for and holding yourself to a higher standard. It means being self-motivated to always act in the best interests of others. Companies with integrity usually achieve amazing things. However, not having integrity can lead to a lack of the other nine things on this list, as well as to trouble with federal or state agencies – such as Medicare and Medicaid. Most employees know that a company with integrity is a workplace where employees are respected and trusted. We feel CoxHealth at Home is such a company. We hope you feel so, too.
